NEW YORK — The shocking aftermath of a deadly accident Thursday morning near Yankee Stadium left twisted pieces of metal and debris strewn across the Bronx.

New York City Police say just after 5 a.m., a woman two blocks from her home was driving down River Avenue on a green light when a BMW collided with her car going through a red light.

The person behind the wheel of the BMW and a passenger fled, leaving the driver of the wrecked Mitsubishi helpless and dying in her seat.

Police officers at the subway station heard the crash and called paramedics.

Although emergency crews responded and used the jaws of life to pull her out, it was already too late. The woman, identified as Cathy Garcia, 69, died at Lincoln Hospital. Her family said she was on her way to work as a medical intake officer for the Department of Prisons.

While the family is obviously upset with the two who were in the other car, they said they are also upset with the city. That’s because they said they didn’t hear of their loved one’s death until hours later, and then tried to locate her remains, only to get no response.

“Finding out that it happened at 5:15 this morning, and only being notified at 2:30-3:00 pm in the afternoon is horrible,” a family member said. “We’ve been to several hospitals… no one seems to have an answer.”

Investigators say the car that hit the woman’s car had paper license plates. A search inside the car revealed the actual license plates and 20 stolen catalytic converters. Police sources believe the suspects were thieves.

Stealing catalytic converters is a lucrative business, because the metals they contain are expensive.

NYPD statistics show that 5,548 Cadillac converters have been stolen so far in 2022 compared to 1,505 for all of 2021, an increase of 269%.
