A newly-released video reveals the moments before an accused drunk driver crashed into a Florida Highway Patrol trooper’s SUV not far from the Skyway 10K.

Authorities are calling Trooper Toni Schuck and another FHP trooper heroes after stopping the driver who was headed in the direction of runners.

At around 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, Kristen Watts, a 52-year-old from Sarasota, drove through the closed toll plaza on the Manatee County side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

  1. The officer stated that she felt that she was the last line of defense from the drunk driver killing the runners. That implies the Florida Dept of Transport didn't do anything to block the bridge from cars. Where I live, when a major bridge was shut down for painting, the DOT placed huge snowplows in front of the bridge to prevent any car from driving onto the bridge and injuring the workers. Why didn't they have something like that for the race?

  2. This lady should have no bond and thrown in prison for attempted murder on many counts. Officer Schuck is lucky to be alive and if she didn't make the decision to stop this driver the story would've ended differently with many casualties of the runners. Officer Schuck saved many lives on this day. Thank God she's okay and recovering. She's a true Hero !!!

  3. I hope she never gets another drivers license as long as she lives. I also think, no matter how drunk he was that she was intent pon mowing down those runners. She was on a kamikazi mission of death.

  4. How does this drunk driver walk away from this without any injury? And if the near to death experience didn’t impact her, she is beyond helping. I hope she gets locked up for a while. The Trooper’s heroism has restored my faith in the humanity.

  6. Let's hope this drunk driver doesn't get a prosecuter that believes, "She has learned her lesson, and I think has suffered enough."

  8. OMG, that was horrendous. I have tears in my eyes thinking about how brave of a move this was. She easily could have been killed. Hero seems to be thrown around a little flippantly these days but that was truly heroic. Much respect to this officer. I hope she recovers well. ❤️

  10. Drunks suck and are the scourge of humanity. I'm still dealing with my injuries daily from an accident in 2001. Damn drunk driver turned left in front of me and basically T boned a parked car at 45mph. On a motorcycle. With a passenger.

    FK DRUNKS!!!
