The driver of the BMW X6 vehicle involved in the events was identified as 24-year-old Carlos Hernandez, who is now charged with reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and criminal possession of stolen property.

The two passengers, Edwin Amparo and Atahualpa Rodriguez, 28 and 29 years old, face charges of possession of stolen property and tools to commit a robbery.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. Thursday at the corner of 161st Street and River Avenue outside of Yankee Stadium.

The fatality, identified by police as 69-year-old Cathy Garcia, was driving a Mitsubishi pickup truck when she was struck by the westbound BMW X6. The victim was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The community has placed candles and flowers where the events occurred in memory of the victim and they say they feel very concerned about the situation of violence in the city.

“Truly, crime is unstoppable, not for any of this,” said Ismael García, a resident of the area.

“One walks with life in let’s say ‘one foot here and one in the cemetery’, that is exactly what we have arrived at this moment,” said Rita Rodríguez, another neighbor.

Garcia was an employee of the city’s Department of Corrections and was on her way to work when the accident occurred.

The Commissioner of the Department of Corrections, Louis Molina, sent a statement stating: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Garcia’s loved ones, as we mourn the loss of our partner.”

Some residents say authorities should work harder to prevent crimes like this from continuing to affect all New Yorkers.

“They really should have a strong hand with this crime that exists,” Rodríguez added.
