MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Family, loved ones and friends gathered Tuesday to honor the lives of the five young men who died in a rear-end accident.
It happened early Saturday morning on the Palmetto Expressway near 57th Avenue.
The victims have been identified by their relatives as Briana Pacalagua, Daniela Marcano, Valeria Peña, Giancarlos Arias and Valeria Cáceres.
They were all between 18 and 25 years old.
Tuesday’s vigil was held at the Hammock Community Park in southwest Miami-Dade.
Police detained Maiky Simeon, 30, who they say was responsible for causing the deadly accident. He faces five counts of vehicular manslaughter.
Simeon was driving his silver Infiniti eastbound on the Palmetto, in the westbound lanes, when he collided head-on with the victim’s Honda sedan.
Rescuers declared each of the victims dead at the scene.

Simeon had to be extracted from his vehicle and was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
Agents have not said whether alcohol played a role in the crash, nor have they indicated what led Simeon to drive the wrong way down the freeway.
If convicted, he faces up to 60 years in prison.
The investigation is ongoing.
GoFundMe accounts have been created for the families of Pacalagua, Marcano, Peña, Arias and Caceres.
