The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office delivered this Thursday to the New Mexico State Attorney’s Office the report with the investigation into the accident in which Alec Baldwin killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of the movie “Rust.”
After the delivery of the documentation, the prosecution anticipated in a statement that it will carry out an “extensive review” to make a “correct and thoughtful” decision when presenting possible charges.
“As with all cases, the objective will be to maintain the integrity of the process, enforce the laws of New Mexico and seek justice,” he added about a process independent of the agreement that Baldwin reached with the Hutchins family to withdraw the lawsuit and continue with the shoot.
In exchange, Matthew Hutchins, the deceased’s widower, will executive produce the film and receive a share of the profits.
The agreement, as explained by the actor’s lawyers, is subject to court approval.
Although if it receives the go-ahead, the civil complaint would be closed, it remains to be seen if the state of New Mexico files charges, since it has approved a budget item of $317,000 so that the prosecution can prosecute four involved, including Baldwin.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the money would cover all the costs related to the trial and to appoint a special prosecutor, Andrea Reeb, as supervisor of the case.
The “Rust” case focuses on the event that occurred on the set of this film on October 21, when director of photography Halyna Hutchins died after being shot by the gun Baldwin was holding during a rehearsal.
After the event, the Hutchins family denounced Baldwin for reckless homicide, but the prosecution has not filed any charges against the actor.
In a parallel investigation, the authorities of New Mexico (United States) imposed a fine of 140,000 dollars in April on the producers of the filming of “Rust”, including Baldwin, for not guaranteeing the security protocol.
