Friso was accompanied by one of his great friends, Florian Moosbrugger. Since the avalanche alert was high on those days, Florian carried a special instrument, an air bag that would allow his head to float in the event of an avalanche, unlike Friso. This was what saved his life.
Fortunately, the prince was wearing a locator that allowed rescuers to pinpoint his location, but the time he spent without oxygen under the snow was too long.
He was immediately taken to the Innsbruck Hospital, in Austria, where the medical report was devastating: “The brain damage after spending more than 20 minutes under the snow and after half an hour of resuscitation is extensive, irreversible, and its extent is unknown. ”. He was later transferred to London, the city where he used to live.

He spent more than a year in a coma, from February 2012 to August 12, 2013, when he died at the Huis ten Bosch palace in The Hague.
Friso was married to Mabel Wisse, for whom he had to give up his position in the Dutch royal family since, in his youth, he was involved with a notorious criminal named Klaas Bruinsma.

The government did not allow the link, but the love between Friso and Mabel was such that the prince preferred to leave his place in the line of succession to the throne in order to marry her. They had two daughters, Luana and Zaria.
