The Civil Guard has arrested the driver of the truck involved in the accident that caused the death last Monday of the general secretary of the PP in Elche, Sergio Rodríguez. The agents have concluded that the driver of the truck, who has been imprisoned, allegedly invaded the opposite lane when, facing forward, the victim was driving in his car, which led to a head-on collision as he was unable to avoid the impact due to the improvised maneuver .
The 45-year-old truck driver is accused of a crime of reckless homicide and another against road safety for driving under the influence of drugs, since he tested positive for narcotics in the test carried out. The competent judicial authority has decreed his immediate entry into prison and the withdrawal of his driving license, as confirmed by the armed institute in a statement.
The events occurred last Monday, August 1, at approximately 6:05 p.m., when the Civil Guard, through the 112 emergency telephone number, learned of a traffic accident that had occurred at kilometer point 1,400 of the CV-854 highway in the municipality of Elche.
Immediately, a team of witnesses from the Traffic Subsector of Alicante went to the scene, who observed a truck and a car that had collided head-on at the scene of the accident.
After submitting the trucker to tests to detect the consumption of alcohol and drugs, he gave a positive result for the consumption of narcotic substances. While this test was being carried out, the lifeless body of the other driver was released. As confirmed by the PP, the victim was the general secretary of the ‘popular’ in Elche and former mayor in the town, Sergio Rodríguez, whose death, at the age of 33, caused a strong commotion in the municipality.
The agents proceeded to arrest the truck driver in the same place, charged with a crime of reckless homicide and another against road safety for driving under the influence of drugs.
