As the boat capsized, the travelers fell into the water where they were seen floating and screaming for help. Many of them were unconscious, some sources point out.
The seriously injured were airlifted to a Miami hospital, where 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez died of her injuries.
In addition to the Miami-Dade firefighters, troops from the county police marine patrol, the Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) attended the scene.
Boca Chica Key is located in Biscayne National Park about 9 miles south of Key Biscayne and about 10 miles east of Cuttler Bay.
In 2021, Florida recorded the most boating accidents of any state. According to statistics from the US Coast Guard, that year there were 723 accidents in the Sunshine State. That is, 266 more than those that occurred in California, the second state with the most incidents of this type.
For its part, the FWC maintains that last year in Florida some 60 people lost their lives in boating accidents.
In the particular case of Miami-Dade, the reported accidents were 97, in which about 7 people died.
Alcohol and drug use are involved in 25% of boating accidents in Miami-Dade, the FWC says.
