Four people, including a 13-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy, died Saturday in a collision between a truck carrying new vehicles and two different vehicles on Route 90 near the city of Paran in the Arava desert. .

Police launched an investigation into the circumstances of the collision. There was no immediate information on the cause.

Route 90, the longest highway in Israel, runs along the eastern border from Metula in the north to Eilat in the south. Most of the highway is decades old and currently consists of a single lane in each direction, with no median. Its length and characteristics have made it one of the deadliest routes in the country.

According to the Ynet news site, the accident area has seen 81 road deaths in less than two decades.

A series of fatal accidents in recent years have prompted calls for road safety to be greatly improved.
