Yesterday, February 28th, 2022, Sumter County Deputies arrested Russell Kornegay, of Ocala, Florida, on charges of trafficking methamphetamine; possession of marijuana under 20 grams; possession of drug paraphernalia; and DUI with property damage.
The arrest was a result of a traffic crash investigation at Morse Blvd and San Marino Dr. in The Villages, Florida, The Civilian Traffic Investigator advised she believed one of the involved parties was under the influence of narcotics and requested a Deputy. Corporal Franklin arrived on the scene, approached the subject (Russell Kornegay of Ocala) who was seated in the vehicle when Corporal Franklin was able to smell a strong odor of marijuana. While searching Kornegay, a loaded syringe was located in his pocket along with a burnt cigarette possibly containing marijuana. Deputy Hartmann then arrived on the scene to conduct the DUI investigation which found the suspect to be under the influence. Cpl. Franklin deployed his K-9 partner, Butan around the vehicle. K9 Butan alerted to the vehicle which was subsequently searched. 53 grams of amphetamine were located and placed into evidence.
Kornegay was charged with the following:
Amphetamine- trafficking or methamphetamine 14 grams or over
Marijuana possession not more than 20 grams
Drug Equipment-possession or use of
DUI-DUI damage to property or person
