The Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin has died at the age of 51 after being hit by a truck during one of his training sessions. The first indications suggest that the veteran runner died instantly in Montebello Vicentino (Vicenza).
As a cyclist, Davide Rebellin He lived the best and the worst of professional sports. He was a huge winning rider and even finished in the top five in the world rankings in more than one season. His trio of victories in the Ardennes in 2004 will remain in his memory: Amstel, Arrow and Liège.
The bitter side came after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when he was second, but tested positive for EPO CERA. That meant the end of Rebellin as an athlete in top-level teams, but not the end of him as a professional cyclist, since for years and years he continued to compete in modest teams and show his love for the sport.
Davide Rebellin continued to compete at maximum level -although in the continental category- up to 50 years of age, without forgetting that at the age of 43 he achieved victories in races of the level of the Giro de la Emilia. The bad news came just when he had abandoned professional competition and in the form of a fatal accident in one of his training sessions.
