Classic Hollywood Stars Who Were Terribly Racist Off-Camera

Uploaded By: Facts Verse

Did you know that Henry Fonda refused to talk to James Stewart for several years after the latter ratted out several Hollywood communists to J. Edgar Hoover during the industry’s Second Red Scare and that an exhibit honoring John Wayne has been removed from the University of Southern California due to the actor’s flagrant racism? While most classic films trick audiences into thinking that Old Hollywood was squeaky clean under its surface, this certainly wasn’t the case! There were plenty of classic Hollywood stars that held some decidedly racist values.

Some of the most racist stars from Old Hollywood include James Stewart and John Wayne. James Stewart may have been a nice guy in the eyes of his coworkers and most of the audience, but the actor was accused of racism by an African-American actor working on the set of one of his films. It seems that James held some backward value from his small-town upbringing, and these caused the actor to become fairly xenophobic later on in life. Besides his racism, this xenophobia was also exemplified in the fact that James helped rat out Hollywood communists to J. Edgar Hoover.

While James Stewart’s legacy hasn’t been affected much by tales of the actor’s racism, John Wayne’s has. John Wayne gave an extremely racist interview to Playboy magazine in 1971, and this interview directly resulted in the actor’s name being removed from an exhibit at the University of Southern California. 2. I usually like your videos but I detested this one attacking people that are dead for comments let’s take John Wayne when he gave that playboy interview he was not long on this earth being eaten up by cancer and on all kinds of drugs I find it very cowardly to attack these men when they can’t defend themselves now that they’re dead do you have the guts to go after those in Hollywood now that are racist like a Whoopi Goldberg who said that jews are not a race or Spike Lee that opens his mouth every 10 minutes then a greeting anybody of non-color it’s easy to pick on those who can’t defend themselves

  3. Hey facts verse idiot, how many of today's actors/producers/studios believe in censorship of conservatives so they can't even work without towing the liberal hollywood communist dreck? How about over 90% of them easily !! None of today's garbage, cgi, woke trash movies hold a candle to the classics Jimmy Stewart was in or many others of his era!

  5. More race baiting….and using dead people. For God’s sake why won’t you people just stop. If there is a problem then try to fix it instead of stirring it up.

  6. Jimmy Stewart did NOT grow up in Indiana. He was born and raised in Indiana, Pennsylvania. And he was one of the greatest actors of all time, and DID NOT deserve to be branded a "racist."

  7. The owners of The New York Times Have ancestors who were slaveowners! They covered up the holocaust! They covered it up for Joseph Stalin! They covered up for Adolf Hitler! Let’s broaden the brush strokes when it comes to painting a history of bigotry and real shameful conduct!

  9. That was nearly a century ago. I f you're going to pursue history, why not pick historical events that have more gravitas. Hollywood — you're kidding right.

  10. The James Stewart /Woody Strode "incident" was a trick played by John Ford on the set of "The man who shot Liberty Valance". Ford liked to bully his actors, especially John Wayne, but one day, it was Stewart's turn. Ford used Stewart's comment on Strode's outfit and make-up (which were not very good in my opinion) to ask him, before all the crew, if he was a racist! Imagine how he was embarrassed!
As far as I know, you can't say that James Stewart was "terribly racist" . From what I read about him, it seems that he was never really at ease with black people but that came from where he grew up, his education… But telling he was terribly racist…His best friend was Henry Fonda, I doubt that Fonda would have befriended a racist… Jane Fonda told that the only time his father slapped her (lightly) was when she used the word "nigger", she was a kid and didn't know the meaning of it, he told her never used it again.
According to British journalist Michael Munn who knew very well James Stewart and his wife Gloria, Stewart was hired by Hoover as a FBI informant. Hoover told him that his goal was to fight the mafia which tried, at this time, to spread its influence on Hollywood. Only Gloria and Henry Fonda knew it. When Stewart told it to Fonda, Fonda was not really happy, he told him that he was naive, that he was used by Hoover to spy on his friends and colleagues, that the fight against the mafia was an excuse…at this time, Fonda left Hollywood to Broadway, so the two friends became estranged for some years…

  11. You forgot to mention Yul Brynner. According to Frank Langella in his book Dropped Names, Brynner was quite racist toward black people.

  12. I will ignore you from here out. why? One actor accuses stewart of racism. well of course..means he's racist. Turned people in for communist listing. Where's tje hard evidence. Hoover's transcripts,etc..have all been released- first time I ever heard of Stewart's collusion. But really this woke crap…
