A man who was running a skateboard on Thursday night, July 7, died when he was hit by a truck driven by a 17-year-old boy, who stopped to help the person. This became at least the second person fatally hit this week in the Rio Grande Valley.
The victim was identified by authorities as Richard Orlando Hernandez, 30, of Edinburg.
The unfortunate incident happened around 10:00 pm in the 800 block of North Closner Boulevard. According to Edinburg police, when officers arrived at the scene they saw a man lying in the middle of the road and a black 2010 Ford F-250 pickup stopped in the center lane.
The 30-year-old man was riding his skateboard north in the center lane of Closner Boulevard when he was struck by the Ford F-250 pickup truck the young man was driving, who rendered assistance until first officers arrived.
The skater, who was wearing dark colored clothing, succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.
This week has been particularly active in terms of unfortunate cases on our roads. Also earlier Thursday, a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a traffic accident at the intersection of Highway 107 and Doolittle Road. The man hit a Nissan Rogue driven by a woman, who received minor injuries, Edinburg Police said. Both she and the motorcyclist were taken to DHR for medical treatment.
Prior to this case, on the night of Tuesday, July 5, a 27-year-old woman identified as Pamela Pena, 27, of Rio Grande City, was killed in another road accident.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a red Hummer H3 vehicle, driven by a woman, was heading northbound on Woods Bros. Highway, north of La Sagunada Highway, in Starr County, collided head-on with a Nissan Altima that was Driven by Pena. The fatal victim was traveling in the company of a man.
According to DPS, the driver of the Hummer suffered minor injuries and was transported to Rio Grande Regional Hospital. While the passenger of the Nissan suffered minor injuries and was transported to Starr County Memorial Hospital. However, Pena was transported to McAllen Medical Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Also on July 5, Jaime Medina, 18, of Harlingen, was killed around 2:00 a.m. during a drive-by shooting. occurred west of FM 800 on Highway 83 in Harlingen, Texas. The information released by the Harlingen Police in a press release detailing that the incident is under investigation.
According to authorities, shortly before 2:00 am two men approached a Harlingen Police officer seeking help for their friend who was in the back seat and had been shot. Medina received medical assistance at the scene and at the hospital, where he eventually died. In this case it is unknown if the young man was shot while in the car.
While on La Homa Highway, just north of Mile 5 Javier Cuellar, 33, of Alton, was run over to death the night of the 4th of july. According to authorities, the man succumbed to injuries received at the scene of the accident that occurred at approximately 10:11 pm.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a gray Ford Focus, containing only one person, was traveling south on La Homa while the pedestrian was walking east-west when he was “struck” by the vehicle.
The driver of the Ford stopped to assist Cuellar. DPS Troopers are further investigating this fatal accident.
