A 54-year-old woman has died after being hit by a motorcycle on a street in Irun. The accident occurred at 6:30 p.m. on the GI-636 at Juan Thalamas Labandibar street, between the Osinbiribil and Behobia roundabouts. The road has been closed to traffic in both directions for almost two and a half hours. Both health personnel and resources from the Ertzaintza have quickly moved to the scene of the accident. They have been treating the victim for more than half an hour but they have not been able to save her life given the seriousness of the injuries she suffered from the hit.
The 22-year-old motorcyclist was injured and had to be transferred to Donostia Hospital, as reported by the Security Department.
The incident has taken place at a zebra crossing and the Ertzaintza is investigating whether the woman has crossed it with a red light.
The collapse of traffic that has been registered this Friday afternoon in Irun due to the kilometric retentions in the Biriatou toll of the AP-8 has caused that the hearse requested to transfer the woman’s body has not been able to access the place of the incident until a few minutes before 8:30 p.m. After the removal of the body, the GI-636 road has been reopened to traffic.
This is the third person to have died in Gipuzkoa this year due to an accident. The first fatality was a 48-year-old neighbor of Beasain in Olaberria on February 1 at around 9:30 p.m. when she left work at the Arcelor Mittal plant. On April 15, a 54-year-old man died and another was slightly injured in an accident that occurred in the pedestrian crossing of the central Euskal Herria street in Ibarra. The fatal victim was IR, an ONCE vendor in a wheelchair who had a kiosk very close to where the tragic event took place.
22 dead from Gipuzkoa since January
With the death of this woman from Irun, there are already 17 people who have lost their lives in traffic accidents that have occurred since January in Gipuzkoa, of which almost half were motorcyclists. In addition, five people have died outside the territory. Mortality on Guipuzcoan roads has increased in such a way in this 2022 that the death toll has already equaled that of all of 2021.
The last man from Gipuzkoa to die from a traffic accident was a 50-year-old motorcyclist from Legazpi, who lived in Vitoria. The incident occurred on the 17th on the N-260-A in the Port of Cotefablo in Yésero (Huesca).
