A 38-year-old mountaineer from Valencia lost her life this Monday when she fell off a cliff when she was on Rusell peak, in the municipality of Montanuy, accompanied by another person. With it, there are 16 deaths throughout 2022 in the Pyrenees, in a year in which there has been a rescue record and the statistics are already around 500 interventions.

The accident happened around 2:15 p.m. The first notice has reached the emergency teams in Catalonia. As the body is in Aragonese territory, the Central Fire Coordination Center of the Generalitat has transferred the distress call to the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (Greim) of Benasque. The Civil Guard has confirmed that the deceased is a 38-year-old resident of Valencia who fell when she was doing a mountain activity on Rusell peak, located at 3,207, in the Maladeta massif.

So far this year, 16 people have died in the Pyrenees, compared to 13 the previous year. Although July and August closed with only one fatal event, in September five people lost their lives. The first was a 68-year-old French mountaineer who died after being hit by some large stone blocks detached on the path of the ibones of the Cresta de Batanes (Torla-Ordesa). They dragged both him and his partner, a 56-year-old French woman who suffered polytrauma, down a slope.

Four days later they died a 22-year-old mountaineer from Navarra plunged into the Brazatos peak (Panticosa) and a 65-year-old Barcelona mountaineer due to a heart attack on the Cabalera peak (Gistaín). To these must be added the fatal accident suffered by a 50-year-old British paraglider on Gallinero Peak. The fateful month of September ended with the death of a 56-year-old resident of Canfranc who fell 30 meters while hunting in a high mountain area.
