WILTON MANORS, Fla. – Wilton Drive was already packed with people Saturday night ahead of Wilton Manors’ annual Stonewall Pride Parade, which celebrates South Florida’s large LGBTQ population.

Wilton Manors is nationally known for having a high proportion of LGBTQ residents.

Organizers expected an attendance of up to 40,000 people to watch the 7 p.m. parade.

Each year, according to the city, Wilton Manors gets more than a million dollars in economic impact during Pride, but attendees said it’s about much more than just bringing money to the area.

“It’s a very difficult time for LGBT people in Florida, so you understand where we’re coming from, but today is about celebration and friendship and love, that’s what the gay community is all about,” said attendee Antonio Cenceno.

The celebration comes a year after a deadly accident marred the occasion in 2021.

One problem the city faced this year was cost.

In light of recent mass shootings across the country and documented threats of violence against Pride events, officials said the security bill for the event has increased from approximately $50,000 to $92,000.

The street fair is scheduled to last until 11 p.m. on Saturday.
